Another year has come and gone. I really thought that 2014 would be a big year of change for me, but in reality it turned into more of the same. Change is on the horizon, and rather than depending on it for happiness, I’m moving forward and promising myself that I will enjoy life. Besides, there were some great new releasees this last year.
Favorite Movie — Guardians of the Galaxy I wanted this movie to be good. I really, really did. When the positive reviews started rolling in on Rotten Tomatoes, I couldn’t be happier. It has been a long time since I saw a space opera that was just full of fun and silliness. I never thought I could fall in love with a tree, or think that Bradley Cooper should be permanently changed into a raccoon. But both of those statements are true.
Runner-up — Edge of Tomorrow I actually just watched this on NYE, but man did I like it! I thought, no. They can’t make Groundhog Day fresh, and how on earth would it be good as a serious alien movie with Tom Cruise? Well, you know what? It is. The pacing is fantastic, Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise play off each other well, the days repeating do not get old, and there are just enough laugh out loud moments. Finally, and this is key: the alien concept is pretty good. Remember how Super 8 was killed by the alien looking dumb? I like the look and movement of these aliens. Familiar and yet different.
Non-Sci Fi Runner-up — Monuments Men I love WWII films. I really love George Clooney ensemble movies. I love artwork. I love seeing Nazi butt get kicked. So this movie was just made for me to love it. It was the right amount of true story, embellishment, humor, and respect. A lovely film.
Favorite Book — A Christmas Carol I typically reserve my favorite book slot for a book that came out that year. Usually that isn’t a problem because I read a decent number of new books. This year, however, I read a grand total of five. Yep, five. It’s that sad. And none of them came out this last year. My reading tastes are changing, and I spent much of the year in a headspace where reading was not enjoyable, hence the small reading list. In fact, most were audiobooks on car rides. Enter A Christmas Carol, read by Tim Curry. It’s brilliant. He brought the story to life.
Favorite New TV Show — The Flash I’m watching a lot of superhero television these days, and I have no problem with that. The Flash, to me, captures the fun and lightness that superheroes have but has been forgotten as of late. This Barry Allen doesn’t have an origin story that looks much like the original origin story, but I like it. The dynamic with the S.T.A.R Labs team is fun (even if Cisco’s dialogue and characterization makes you cringe), and the natural crossover with Arrow gives the world a fleshed-out feel. It also means we see a lot more of Felicity and I love Felicity so that’s fantastic.
Here’s to a new year of great reads, great watches, and great entertainment.
